The New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration yesterday set the 2009 property tax rate at $12.54 per $1,000 of assessed value, which represents an increase of $1.08, or 9.4-percent, over the 2008 rate of $11.46.
The increase partially reflects a decline in the total assessed valuation of the town from $1,944,660,288 in 2008 to $1,829,733,283 in 2009, a drop of $114.9-million or 5.9-percent.
The town portion of the tax rate rose from $3.97 to $4.23, an increase of 6.5-percent that closely tracked the fall in property values.
The local school portion of the tax rate climbed from $4.02 to $4.54, a 13-percent increase, while the state education property tax increased from $2.17 to $2.40, or by 10.6-percent. Taken together the school portion jumped 12-percent.
Town Manager Phil Warren said that tax bills will be mailed on Wednesday, December 16 with payment due by Monday, January 18, 2010.
