NEW HAMPTON — Fire destroyed a house on Beech Hill Road early Saturday, and firefighters discovered a person dead inside the residence.

The fire killed 100 chickens that were raised on the property. A dog also died in the fire, according to a department press release.

The identification of the person was withheld pending an autopsy.

New Hampton firefighters said that when they arrived at 3:05 a.m., fire was sweeping through the home.

Firefighters were hampered by subzero temperatures and an unplowed driveway.

There have been a number of residential fires in the region in recent days.

Firefighters urge that people make sure their smoke detectors are in working order, they have a plan for getting out of the house in case of emergency and that doors are not obstructed by snow.
