LAKEPORT — A wide area around Union Avenue in Lakeport was without power for a short period Friday afternoon, after Eversource cut power to the neighborhood following a utility pole which caught fire near Irwin Marine.Â
The fire department closed Union Avenue between Walnut and Stark streets shortly after 2 p.m. and rerouted traffic along Mechanic Street as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 2 p.m. and it took about half an hour after the power was cut for emergency personnel to put it out with fire extinguishers, Lt. Brian Keyes of the Laconia Fire Department said.Â
They were able to extinguish the fire before the pole collapsed, which would have strewn electric wires across the road, Keyes said.
Power was restored in the Lakeport area around 3:25 p.m. Friday afternoon.
