LACONIA — A group formed to mark next year's 125th anniversary of the founding of Laconia announced plans Thursday for celebrations that will include a parade, a carnival and fireworks.
Pamela Clark, president of Celebrate Laconia, said the group's mission is to "celebrate the past, present and future of our great city of Laconia."
"By generating collaboration between local citizens, public officials, civic organizations and private businesses, we aim to encourage and stimulate cultural and economic development."
Over the next year and a-half, a number of historic events will be celebrated, starting this summer with an event to mark the 125th anniversary of the construction of the Laconia Passenger Station. A celebration at the station is planned for Saturday, Aug. 19. Aug 22 is the actual anniversary.
"From our perspective, this is not simply a celebration of the city; rather, it is a celebration of the people who have made our city what it is today, the organizations, neighborhoods and individuals that come together to create our vibrant community," Clark said.
A booklet will be published to list all the events. A book on Laconia's history will be published.
The actual anniversary of the city's founding is March 24. A birthday celebration is planned, with details still to be worked out.
The weekend after July 4 will include a parade, a carnival, fireworks and entertainment.
Clark said $35,000 has been set aside by the city to help fund the events. Sponsors and ticket and souvenir sales will also help provide funding.
