Ken Carver, the operator of Cobble Mountain Stables, and Doc, a 14-year-old Belgian Draft Horse originally from Maine, have brought winter sleigh rides to Gunstock Mountain Resort.

According to Carver, “Doc and the sleigh rides are a perfect fit for Gunstock. Our sleigh is a custom built one-horse open sleigh. We do trail rides all through the summer season. Having Doc and the sleigh adds another wonderful winter dimension to what the stables and Gunstock have to offer. We are looking forward to a great inaugural year.”

“The custom sleigh is perfect for groups of up to four people, and it is wonderful for a romantic trip along the lantern lit trail through the woods near the base of the mountain.”

The ride is about 20 minutes, depending upon Doc’s mood and where he wants to take guests. There are plenty of blankets aboard the sleigh for those who are cold blooded or just want to cozy up. Carver weaves great tales about Gunstock and the Lakes Region for those who are interested. Private rides are available on request for $59. Advance registration is necessary.

The rides run Tuesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 12 noon to 9 p.m., Sunday from 12 Noon to 5 p.m. The fare is $15 for adults and $12 for kids 12 and under. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. The sleigh ride phone numbers are 603-630-9066 or Gunstock at 603-293-4341 ext. 153.

After entering Gunstock at Area Road (which is off of Rt. 11A/Cherry Valley Road) take the first right turn immediately after the cross-country skiing center registration building. Follow that road down to its end. The warming hut for the sleigh rides is on the right.
