GLENDALE — Gov. Kelly Ayotte emphasized safety on the water this summer, during an event at Marine Patrol headquarters, along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, to kick off boating season June 11.

The press event was organized by the New Hampshire Marine Trades Association. Speakers reminded boaters of the rules that come with operating a boat on New Hampshire’s lakes, and how to be safe and environmentally responsible when boating this summer.

Along with Ayotte, speakers included Director of State Police Col. Mark Hall, NHMTA President John Whalley, State Police Lt. Irwin Malilay, and NH Fish and Game Lt. Bradley Morse.

“As we open the season, we want to make sure to have one message that is unmistakably clear — safe boating is everyone’s responsibility,” Whalley said. “Every operator, every passenger, every vessel on the water has a role in keeping our waters safe, clean, and fun for all.”

Malilay reminded boaters to make sure they have the right safety equipment, do a safety check of their vessels, and familiarize themselves with the state’s boating laws before they head out on the water.

“Wearing a life jacket remains one of the most effective ways to prevent a tragedy,” Malilay said. “These laws exist to protect everyone enjoying our waterways.”

Ayotte underscored  the importance of boating safety, and encouraged everyone planning to boat on any of New Hampshire’s lakes this summer to enjoy it safely.

“People come [here] from around the country, and around the world, because New Hampshire has such beautiful lakes,” Ayotte said. “We care deeply about our lakes, and we want to welcome everyone to New Hampshire. I encourage everyone to come enjoy our lakes, but do it safely and responsibly.”
