A story about the proposed operating budget for the Shaker School District that appeared in The Daily Sun on Friday, Jan. 23 included information that needs clarification. The total budget for the Belmont-Canterbury school district is projected to increase 10-percent for the 2007-2008 fiscal year but, according to business administrator Debbie Gay, an increase in non-property tax revenues will reduce the "net" increase to 5.5-percent. The projected tax rate impact is an additional 6.64-percent for Belmont and 9.97-percent for Canterbury.

Additionally, The Daily Sun erred in identifying the cost of health insurance as a major driver of the budget increase. In fact, Gay said, a significant rise in the district's mandatory contribution to the state-managed fund that pays teacher retirement benefits was a much larger influence on the increase in the bottom line than was health insurance.
