Community members celebrated the life of Hope Makris, who died at age 100 on May 29, at The NASWA Resort in The Weirs on Thursday afternoon. The event followed funeral services at Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Concord. The celebration was to the community, and guests were served appetizers, drinks and desserts made from Makris' original recipes, which she made at The NASWA Resort until she was 99.5. Desserts included carrot cupcakes, key lime tarts, and both chocolate Oreo and white chocolate cheesecakes. There will be another celebration for Makris on Sunday, June 29, for NASWA Day, celebrating 90 years since the Makris family started working in the hospitality industry. Cynthia Makris, Hope's daughter, said the Peter Makris Memorial Run Fund will now be directed to a scholarship at the University of New Hampshire in Hope's memory, to support a hospitality student from New Hampshire. Hope graduated from UNH in the class of 1946. To learn more, visit naswa.com/peter-makris-memorial-run. "She was just the most remarkable woman. She blazed the trail back in the '40s as a business woman. She was a mother, she was a mentor, she was a business woman, she was a friend. She was beloved by so many. Today really brings together all those parts of her life," Cynthia said.
