Friends and family of Hope Makris celebrated her 100th birthday at the NazBar & Grill at the NASWA Resort in the Weirs on Saturday afternoon. Makris’ birthday is on Dec. 5, but she will be in Florida this winter, so celebrated while still in Laconia. The guests were served lunch, and could then pick from a variety of desserts, most made from Hope's original recipes. These included mini key lime tarts, Grand Marnier chocolate mousse cupcakes, carrot cake cupcakes and baklava. The birthday cake, a carrot cake, was also made from Hope's original recipe. Republican gubernatorial candidate Kelly Ayotte came to wish Hope a happy birthday, as did State Rep. Mike Bordes (R-Laconia) and  Rep. Charlie St. Clair (D-Laconia). Hope's daughter, Cynthia Makris, said despite her mother not quite being 100 just yet, she is in her 100th year of life, which is the real reason for celebration. "When you turn 100, you're in your 101st year, right?" she said. "So she's in her 100th year."
