Police are investigating a break-in at Waukewan Antiques of 55 Main Street late Monday night or early Tuesday morning when an undisclosed quantity of custom antique jewelry, including a number of heavy gold rings, was stolen.

Paul Hough, who has owned and operated the business for the past 12 years, said that he discovered the burglary when he opened the store on Tuesday morning. "They tried to jimmy the front door," he said, "but when they couldn't get it open, they just shattered the glass. Everything was wide open when I arrived."

Hough suspected that the thief or thieves had visited the store and surveyed the inventory in advance of the break-in. "They went right for certain showcases and broke them open like they knew what they wanted," he said.

Detective John Eichorn urged anyone with information that could assist in identifying the person or persons responsible for the break-in and recovering the stolen property to contact the Meredith Police Department at 279-4561.
