Students at Woodland Heights Elementary School board the bus after the first day of school on Monday. Students across the Lakes Region are back in school for the 2026-27 school year, earlier than usual. Students are used to starting the semester in September, but due to the date of Labor Day this year — Monday, Sept. 7 — kids are back in classes early. A bill introduced in the New Hampshire Senate earlier this year would have mandated students to return after Labor Day annually, but it failed to gain support.
