LACONIA — The first Giuseppe Bonanno Memorial Game brought over 200 spectators to Merrill Fay Arena on Thursday night.

In the matchup between the Laconia-Winnisquam-Inter-Lakes Lakers and the Kearsarge-Plymouth Cats saw the Cats beat the Lakers 4-3 in a spirited showing of youth development hockey.

Bonanno, 18, died in a motorcycle accident in Belmont on July 12, 2024. Now, friends and family have created a nonprofit organization in his name in order to support youth interested in pursuing a career in wildlife law enforcement, Bonanno’s own aspiration.

Final fundraising numbers were not immediately available, but the event raised at least $800 from admission alone for the cause. Daniels said she also sold out of apparel before the first period had even started.

The stands were packed with excited fans Thursday night when his mother, Jessica Daniels, made her way to center ice to perform the ceremonial puck drop before the game. By her side were two of Bonanno’s friends, Jack Nedeau and John Shea.

The Giuseppe M. Bonanno Foundation will begin its operations by supplying two lifetime fishing licenses and two scholarships to students enrolled in conservation law enforcement programs. Down the line, Daniels said she'd like to grow the organization and provide mentorship to young people, organize outdoor excursions for students, train youth in CPR and first aid, and establish wildlife conservation efforts such as tree planting or milfoil mitigation. Notably, she said she’d hope to offer support to parents after the loss of a child.
