TILTON — A three-vehicle wreck closed Route 3 for nearly five hours and left two people injured, one severely, Tuesday night, according to emergency officials.

First responders with Tilton-Northfield Fire District were dispatched to 725 Laconia Road (Route 3) at 4:35 p.m. Feb. 6, to respond to a severe crash, Deputy Chief Sean Valovanie said Wednesday.

Officers with the Tilton Police Department also responded to the scene at 4:35 p.m., a Tilton Police Department press release noted.

725 Laconia Road is the site of the former Anchorage at the Lake hotel, and currently the site of a new development project.

The crash involved a pickup truck headed westbound along Route 3 and a crossover SUV and a sedan traveling eastbound.

“The end result was the pickup in the middle of the eastbound lane and the other two ended up off of the side of the road,” Valovanie said.

The driver of the pickup truck sustained severe injuries and was transported to Concord Hospital-Laconia by a Tilton-Northfield fire department ambulance, Valovanie said.

That driver was then transported to Concord Hospital-Concord, according to the press release.

The driver of the SUV sustained severe and life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Concord Hospital-Concord by another Tilton-Northfield Fire Department ambulance and the driver of the passenger sedan transported themselves to seek medical attention, Valovanie said.

Police would not identify the injured persons, citing an ongoing investigation into the wreck.

“When officers arrived, they found three vehicles involved, with two of the occupants sustaining life-threatening injuries,” the police department press release stated.

Laconia Road, which is the busiest road in the TNFD fire district, was closed until about 9:15 p.m. while the Belknap County Accident Reconstruction Team conducted a crash investigation, Valovanie said.

“We have a handful [of motor vehicle accidents] each year between Laconia Road and Highway 93 — it’s our busiest area,” Valovanie said.
