NORTHFIELD — Six pets died in a kitchen fire on Thursday, according to Tilton-Northfield Fire & EMS. The homeowner notified the department in person at 6:52 p.m. that their kitchen at 25 Granite St. was on fire.

The first crews to arrive at 6:55 p.m. found an extinguished kitchen fire, according to media release from the department. The crews checked for any remaining fire and ventilated the smoke. The homeowner had left for the day and returned in the evening to find the kitchen on fire, according to the release. The homeowner attempted to extinguish the fire. Without a working phone, the homeowner drove to the fire station to report the blaze. The building did not appear to have working smoke detectors, according to the media release.

Firefighters say the building is a modular home, and damage was extensive in the kitchen, as well as smoke and soot damage in the remainder of the home. The scene was cleared by 8:30 p.m.

The fire is considered accidental and started on the stove top.

“Working smoke detectors can alert you and your neighbors of a potential emergency,” said firefighter Zach Mellett. “Tilton Northfield Fire & EMS has a Fire Prevention fund that can assist with the purchase of smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and batteries. The duty shifts are also available to assist with installation of the detectors and batteries.”

Franklin Fire Department assisted on the scene.
