ASHLAND — Ryan C. Berg, of Bristol, has been identified by State Police as the driver who died in an accident along Interstate 93 on Sunday.
During the accident, Berg's car crashed and then caught on fire. The accident remains under investigation.
Berg, 21, died at the scene. According to State Police, the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death to be smoke inhalation and burns.
At 2:44 a.m. on Oct. 12, State Police received a call about a vehicle that had gone off the road and was on fire, about a mile north of Exit 24 on I-93. Officers from Troop F responded to find the vehicle on fire, according to a media release from State Police.
A preliminary investigation at the scene found the driver of a 2023 Nissan Sentra was driving southbound when the car went off the right side of the road, crashed, and caught fire. Berg was alone in the vehicle, according to the report.
Troopers were assisted by members of the Ashland Fire and Plymouth Fire and Rescue departments.
Ashland Fire Chief Robert Bousquet said an ambulance from Plymouth arrived before him, and he heard there were bystanders at the scene. When he arrived, the only vehicle there was the Nissan, completely on fire.
“There was no getting near it until we extinguished it,” Bousquet said.
Bousquet said firefighters put out the blaze, discovered the body of the driver, and notified the state Fire Marshal’s Office, as is customary in fatal accident involving a fire.
Tyler Dumont, spokesperson for State Police, said all aspects of the accident remain under investigation.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Trooper Jawara Conde at 603-451-9555 or Jawara.G.Conde@dos.nh.gov.
