PLYMOUTH — An officer-involved shooting in Plymouth left one man dead early Thursday morning, state officials say. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation by the state Office of the Attorney General.

Officers from the Plymouth Police Department were called to the Federal House Inn at 27 Route 25, after a disturbance was reported around 2:40 p.m. on Nov. 6, according to a Department of Justice spokesperson.

Officers who responded to the call heard sounds consistent with gunshots coming from the interior of the residence and a suspect barricaded himself inside, police say.

The New Hampshire State Police Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT Unit responded to provide assistance to Plymouth police.  Over the course of several hours, officers were able to communicate with an adult male armed with a long gun who was identified as the individual involved in the reported disturbance.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday morning, the SWAT Unit advised over the radio they had fired on the male involved in the disturbance. Following the shooting, that person was located near a first-floor doorway, suffering from gunshot wounds.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which took place on Thursday.

Six officers with the New Hampshire State Police SWAT Unit fired their weapons during the response. Pursuant to department protocol, the names of those six troopers involved are being withheld pending the conclusion of formal interviews.

Late Wednesday night, the Plymouth Police Department made a statement about officers responding to the scene that day at about 2:40 p.m.

Police said the Mountain Village Charter School went into lockdown along with other businesses in the area as a result of the disturbance. There was at no time an active threat inside the charter school, located at 13 Route 25. Police said the suspect had been contained and asked people to avoid traveling into the area.

No law enforcement officers were injured at the scene and there is no threat to the public, a Department of Justice spokesperson said Thursday.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation and further information will be released as it becomes available, including the adult male’s identity and the cause and manner of his death following the conclusion of the Thursday autopsy, according to NH DOJ.
