City resident sentenced to 15 days in jail for animal abuse

LACONIA — A city resident was sentenced following animal abuse charges in May, which resulted in two dogs being euthanized and the removal of 12 additional pets. Aaron Arbor, 36, started serving jail time for his charges last weekend.

Arbor, of Warren Street, was sentenced by Judge Laura Lombardi Sept. 10, in Laconia District Court, on two counts of animal cruelty and negligence. He originally entered a not guilty plea, which was amended. He'll serve 15 days in Belknap County Jail, over five consecutive weekends. 

His sentence began Friday.

Attempts to contact Arbor’s public defender, Connor George, were unsuccessful.

Arbor must enroll in an animal cruelty course, and is not allowed to own animals for three years. Restitution of $969 must be paid, with $450 earmarked for the New Hampshire Humane Society, and $519 for the Laconia Police Department.

"The $519.16 reimbursement is Capital Area Emergency Vet for the exams, euthanasia, and cremation," Police Chief Matt Canfield wrote in an email.

A 350-day sentence was suspended until Sept. 9, 2029. Arbor is on probation for a period of two years, and must exhibit good driving behavior for three years, which includes not committing any felony crimes, misdemeanors nor major motor vehicle violations.

Arbor was taken into custody at 10:12 a.m. on May 6, following an investigation by Animal Control Officer Tanya Smith. Smith saw two dogs “under the ownership” of Arbor with ribs and back bones showing. They were “not in good health and needed medical assistance,” according to charging documents.

The euthanized dogs, Loki and Paws, appeared to have a skin issue that included marks and rashes. Loki appeared “very sick and weak due to the lack of hydration and/or food.” Paws was removed from the home wearing a urine-stained sweater with a strong odor.

In addition to Loki and Paws, 12 other pets were removed including more dogs, cats and a rabbit.
