The Pitt fans just learned ahead of Episode 13 of the second season, dropping on Thursday, April 2, that it will be one of the last episodes with Supriya Ganesh as Dr. Samira Mohan.
Ganesh will not be returning for Season 3 in what Variety says is “a story-driven decision.” Interestingly, Mohan was planning on leaving Pittsburgh soon — she was going to go back to New Jersey to be with her mom, only to learn in the premiere that she’s getting married, selling the house, and going on a year-long cruise. That has shaken up the senior resident ever since, as she tries to figure out what she’s going to do next year — she doesn’t have anything lined up at PTMC now — with it contributing to the panic attack she had in Episode 10.
While it’s possible that the Season 2 finale could explain why we won’t see her for the next onscreen shift, we might also have to wait until she’s offscreen in Season 3 to hear about where she is. She could, after all, simply be off the shift that Season 3 follows; each season covers one shift, with each episode one hour of it. Or, she could have moved back to New Jersey or elsewhere, and we hear about it in conversation, much like we did Collins (Tracy Ifeachor didn’t return for Season 2) in Episode 4.
Fans have, of course, already started expressing how much they’re going to miss Mohan. But on Reddit, in reaction to the news, they’ve also been noting that any exit shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.
“Devastated at Supriya’s exit, though story-wise it makes sense as all season she’s been trying to figure out what to do at the end of her residency,” one person wrote before expressing hope of seeing her in a future season. “I can only hope she returns at some point! She’ll be the best doctor in Geriatrics anyone could hope for.” Another commenter wrote in reply, “I don’t mind if that ends up being her path & if she returns as a guest, she totally wears it as a badge of pride.”
As one viewer pointed out, “people need to prepare themselves for cast shakeups every season with a show like this. It will inherently have lots of turnover due to the nature of the show.”
Another fan suggested, with the hope that however her absence is explained, it’s possible we see her in a fourth season, “She could be visiting her mother or going to temporarily stay with her mother for whatever reason (illness, injury, whatever). … But we know there was some mild set-up to her going to New Jersey at some point so the question is if she’s actually moving or they reveal her mother needs her back for a short time and that’s why she’s not there next season, but also doesn’t close the door to her being permanently gone.”
At least a couple of people like the idea of The Pitt explaining a character’s absence in a season as simply a day off. “A day off sounds pretty reasonable. I actually like the idea of not having the same main cast every season because to me that feels realistic – yeah I’ll miss them, like with the supporting cast that aren’t working today at The Pitt such as Kiara – but that makes the show feel even more realistic,” one wrote, and another added, “If it’s a day off, I can handle that. I think it would be a unique way to handle a character’s absence, they still can have her not there for story purposes, but it gives them a way back in for her to return when we can know it’s only temporary. But if it’s Samira leaving the hospital, that sucks because it means Supriya probably is gone as a regular for good.”
