Friday Night Lights was a hit — even if it faced cancellation more than once — for five seasons from 2006 to 2011. And so it’s no surprise that there’s been talk about bringing it back in some way. In December 2024, Peacock announced it was developing an adaptation of the football hit.
And so when TV Insider caught up with the cast and producers of FNL at ATX TV Festival at the end of May, we had to ask about any updates.
“No update right now,” showrunner and executive producer Jason Katims told us. (Watch the video above.) But he did add that, “I think if you’re going to do Friday Night Lights, you would want it to be in Texas. But NIL is affecting — even if it’s not in high school in Texas right now, it’s affecting high school.”
Added Scott Porter, who starred as Jason Street, “What’s really funny about NIL and Friday Night Lights is we kind of already explored it a little bit with Voodoo [Aldis Hodge]. Even though it was under the table and now it’s just above the table, but high school athletes getting paid to relocate, all of these different things. I mean, it was going on forever and ever and ever. Now it’s just legitimized. We’ve kind of already explored a lot of this. Now, of course, there’s a whole new angle, and there’s the social media aspect, under a microscope at all times, but I’m just glad to hear that he said it would stay in Texas. Friday Night Lights can’t go anywhere else.”
When it was announced that this new series was in development, Peacock described it as being set “in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane, when a ragtag high school football team and their damaged interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship. Through their unexpected rise, the football team becomes a beacon of light for their town.”
