Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman) went to great lengths to help his friend and partner-in-crime Lee Jung-Gil (C.S. Lee) before he could be sent back to Earth for trial … and likely assassination. But could the effort cost him everything? Warning: Spoilers for For All Mankind Season 5 Episode 2, “The Hard Six” ahead!
After Lee was arrested for a murder he insisted he did not commit, Ed needed nothing more than his word to believe his story was true. After pulling all the other levers he could, pressuring both Dev (Edi Gathegi) and Lenya (Costa Ronin) with no luck, he realized he’d have to take action himself.
He gathered a small team of allies to help him take a big risk — one that was too big for Miles (Toby Kebbell), Mandy (Shannon Lucio), and most of their friends — to intercept and free Lee during transport.
By depressurizing the cabin and incapacitating the guards, along with Lee, Ed and his crew were able to infiltrate the rover and take Lee off to base at the ISN compound with a stolen hopper. There, he could be safe from extradition. All the while, though, Ed was coughing up blood and too weak to join Lee on the base after outrunning the pursuing hoppers.
By the time Celia (Mireille Enos) — who’d been distracted before, investigating mystery deliveries to the elevator station — caught up to Ed, he was motionless in his pilot’s seat. Celia then checked his pulse and issued a dire request, “We need a medic right f**king now.”
Could this be the end for Ed, the stalwart of the show? It very well could be. After all, Ed is now an octogenarian, and he has consistently put himself in dangerous and bodily challenging situations since we first met him in the series premiere. If that does happen, it would certainly be the end of an era for the show, which has long hinged on the bravery and bravado of Ed Baldwin to carry the story forward. And at this point, he’s one of the few remaining originals of the series.
On the other hand, if he survives this latest scare, we’ll have to just assume being on Mars has made him immortal. Dare to dream.
