Make way for some new members of the Ton! After Bridgerton Season 4 told Benedict and Sophie’s love story, the Regency romance is moving on to Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza). The Shondaland hit, based on Julia Quinn’s novels, has already started filming its fifth season, and on April 8, Netflix revealed that three new characters will be added to the mix.

Not only that, but the streamer has teased what roles they’ll play in Francesca and Michaela’s romance. Though Netflix has already hinted that Bridgerton will venture to the Scottish countryside in Season 5, it’ll also see Francesca return to London to reenter the marriage mart. Her reasoning is practical, but when her late husband’s cousin, Michaela, returns, it complicates Francesca’s resolve.

Below, we’re breaking down everything we know about Season 5 so far, including a potential premiere date, the new characters’ descriptions, and more. (Warning: Spoilers for Bridgerton Season 4 ahead.)

Who will be the leads of Bridgerton Season 5?

Bridgerton is switching up the order of Quinn’s books once again! Instead of Eloise (Claudia Jessie), the fifth-eldest Bridgerton sibling, her younger sister is stepping into the spotlight first.

In the announcement video, we see Francesca walking outside to stand beside Michaela in what appears to be Scotland. They look at each other before their hands touch. “Do not fret, dearest readers, for a certain countess shall find love again… Bridgerton Season 5 is now in production,” the caption read. The streamer also revealed photos of Dodd and Baduza from a recent photo shoot.

Season 4 tackled the devastating loss of John Stirling (Victor Alli), Francesca’s husband and Michaela’s beloved cousin. After the funeral, Michaela took off without telling Francesca. Over the course of the season, Francesca and Michaela had grown closer, and the feelings between them were simmering just below the surface.

“I remember in the script, I think the word ‘primal’ was used,” Dodd told Swooon of Francesca and Michaela’s connection. “I think there is an instinctive thing there, but at the moment, Francesca’s not aware of anything. I think she just sees somebody who is so opposite to her and is messing things up that she’s worked so hard for. I think Francesca likes things very neat and tidy, and she’s in control of it, and she’s not in control of Michaela, and she can’t control Michaela.”

As viewers will recall, Season 3 shook up the order of things by putting Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton) in the leading roles, deviating from Quinn’s book order. Many believed that Eloise’s love story with Sir Phillip Crane (Chris Fulton) might be next. Viewers met Sir Phillip Crane in Season 1 as the brother of George Crane, the late love of Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), and father of her children, Oliver and Amanda. He married Marina to protect her in society, but despite their arrangement, it seemed the duo’s relationship was primarily platonic when Phillip and Marina reappeared for a Season 2 episode.

Despite fan theories about changing Eloise’s romantic endgame, Brownell confirmed to Swooon that Eloise and Phillip would end up together. “I think we are interested in honoring the love interest from Eloise’s book. I can dispel, she’s not ending up with Theo. She’s ending up with the love interest from her book,” she said.

Brownell had played coy leading up to the reveal about which Bridgerton sister would take center stage next. She wore pocket squares with the initials E and F at the premiere, and told Deadline, “Both characters with the initials on my pocket squares will get seasons in 5 in 6. In what order? I can’t say.”

When will Bridgerton Season 5 premiere?

Bridgerton Season 5 doesn’t have a premiere date, but if it were to follow the pattern of past releases, we could speculate that it would debut in 2028, as there’s been roughly a two-year wait between each chapter of the series.

At a BFI event in February 2026, Brownell revealed that the Bridgerton crew was “very nearly about to start” production on Season 5. The showrunner has acknowledged the long wait times between seasons in the past.

“We are working to try and put the seasons out more quickly, but they do take eight months to film, and then they have to be edited, and then they have to be dubbed into every language,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “And the writing takes a very long time as well, so we’re kind of on a two-year pace, we’re trying to speed up, but somewhere in that range.”

Who are the new Bridgerton Season 5 cast members?

Mobland‘s Tega Alexander will make his debut as Lord Marcus Anderson’s (Daniel Francis) son, Christopher Anderson. Per his official description, Christopher is a “Regency-era Casanova.” Though he presents as cheeky, there are self-doubts hidden under his confident exterior. The show also promises that he’ll “make his mark on society, one way or another.”

Another newcomer to the Ton is Carnival Row‘s Jacqueline Boatswain, who will portray Michaela’s mother. Michaela gets her spirit from Helen Stirling, but she’s more adherent to the ways of society than her daughter. She’ll guide (“and occasionally push”) Michaela through the social season.

Michaela will have another person in her corner: Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, who will be played by Mobland‘s Gemma Knight Jones. There’s also more to Elizabeth, who’s an old friend and confidante to Michaela, than meets the eye. Her playful charm masks a “grounded realist who is wise to the unspoken rules of society.” She’ll also serve as Michaela’s guide to London.

Which cast members will return for Bridgerton Season 5?

You can expect the majority of the Bridgerton family to return in Season 5. In addition to Francesca and Michaela, members of the family still living in Bridgerton House will likely be series regulars, including Eloise, Violet (Ruth Gemmell), Hyacinth (Florence Hunt), and Gregory (Will Tilston). Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley have made brief appearances as Anthony and Kate since their season, so it’s likely they’ll pop up again if their schedules permit. Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha‘s season just wrapped, but we’re confident the Season 4 couple will be in Season 5.

Given the new Lady Whistledown situation, Penelope and Colin are expected to return. In Season 4, Penelope retired as Lady Whistledown, but another person(s) took up the pen. Brownell also told Swooon about her Season 5 plans for Polin. “I think we’re really excited to see the way their relationship develops as both being novelists,” she said. “But I think chiefly what will be interesting is seeing the way that they each are there for their various siblings.”

Depending on the lead of Season 5, that would determine how much we’d see of Fulton’s Sir Phillip and Baduza’s Michaela. A season of Bridgerton wouldn’t be complete without Golda Rosheuvel‘s Queen Charlotte and Adjoa Andoh‘s Lady Danbury. With Alice Mondrich (Emma Naomi) as the Queen’s new lady-in-waiting, she’ll likely be joining the fun in Season 5 alongside her husband, Will (Martins Imhangbe).

Which book is Bridgerton Season 5 based on?

Since Season 5 is taking the Francesca route, the show will explore her love story from When He Was Wicked. The show already started tapping into Francesca’s book by introducing Michaela (in a gender-swap twist) and incorporating John’s death from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm in Season 4. Francesca’s season will dive into her love story with Michaela and how they both move forward after such a tragic loss.
