LACONIA — The defending Division III champion Laconia Sachems suffered their first lacrosse loss since 2015 as they fell 9-7 in a closely fought game with Plymouth Monday afternoon on their home field. The Sachems went undefeated last year when they won the Division III title.
After falling behind 7-4 late in the third period the Sachems had rallied to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:26 left to play in the final period.
Leading the comeback were Riley Roy, who scored with only 23 seconds left in the third, and Jake Steele, who scored just 53 seconds into the final frame to close the gap to 7-6 and then knotted the score at 7-7 on a goal on which Roy assisted at the 7:26 mark.
But Plymouth's Tyler Morrison scored what proved to be the game winner with 5:40 left to make it 8-7. Connor Mcgowan put the icing on the cake with 2:38 left when he scored after collecting a pass from Marcus Morrel.
Laconia opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period with Cole Reed scoring at the 8:26 mark and Jake Steele scoring at the 6:29 mark. Ethan Richard got Plymouth on the scoreboard with a goal at the 5:40 mark.
Morrel's goal tied the score at 2-all just 37 seconds into the second period and Richard put Plymouth up 3-2 with 6:32 left in the period/
But the Sachems stormed back with goals just 34 seconds apart from Mark Chaisson at 3:41 and Steele at 3:07 to take a 4-3 lead at half time.
The third period was all Plymouth as the Bobcats struck with goal by Morrel at 10:27, a Morris
son goal at 8:04, a Morrel goal at 5:26 and another Morrison goal at 1:32.
Morrel and Morrison led Plymouth with three goals apiece while Richard added two and Mcgowan a solo goal.
Steele led Laconia with four goals with Chaisson, Reed and Roy also scoring.
The Sachems had opened their season with victories over Trinity 8-2 and and Coe-Brown Academy by a 9-3 score. They play their next game Wednesday at Con-Val.
