Dennis Scott Holman, born Nov. 1, 1949, Manchester, died Nov. 18, 2024, Richmond, Virginia. A stoic and humble man, quietly tenacious, secretly generous and tender.
Devoted son and husband, favorite uncle, brother, mentor, counselor, and friend. And a friend of Bill’s for nearly 40 years. A gazelle-like runner, avid reader of history, a man of wit and wry humor. He lived every moment of his life fully and presently, ending each day with a journal entry of his activities and thoughts. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University where he made lifelong friends and memories. He received his certification in Substance Abuse Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Avis and Ralph Holman.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Kathleen Maccio; his brother, David Clarence, a pal with whom he would laugh and reminisce for days on end, and David’s partner, Maryellen O’Brien. Forever he will remain the cherished, fatherly uncle of Alaine and Jack Northcott, Amanda and Jay Samaha, Steve Plummer (Nicki) and Dave Plummer (Kelly). He was the mountaintop to his brothers- and sisters-in-love, Christine and Christopher Maccio, MaryEllen Maccio and David Schumer, Tia and Michael Maccio, Doug Plummer, and Kathy Smith. He was the revered and treasured uncle of Hilary and Nate Schumer, Molly Schumer and Josh O’Rourke, Devin and Joe Maccio, Tony Maccio and Anna Klassen, Meg and Danny Maccio, Lapis Schumer, Sam Schumer and Matthew Bathan. He was best great-uncle to the next generation, Jonathan, Caleb, and Ethan Northcott, Sophia and Liam Schumer, Elliot, Rylan and Chloe Maccio, and Elijah and Shiloh O’Rourke. He loved and was loved to the moon and back by his favorite beach buddies, Avis and Nick Samaha and Maddie and Ben Maccio. He was cousin-in-love to too many to name, and especially loved by the Bondi 8. His friendships were wide and deep, with many a man calling him "brother from another mother," chief among them, Gaylord Husk.
Mrs. Holman gratefully acknowledges the years of care and devotion by the medical teams at the Massey Cancer Center at Virginia Commonwealth University, especially Drs. Gordon Ginder, George Guruli and John Melson, and Nurse Esther, and everyone who worked so valiantly to relieve his pain at day’s end.
A memorial will be held in the spring of 2025.
Those wishing to honor Dennis might consider a donation of blood to the American Red Cross or any effort that leads to an increase in blood and platelet donations.
