PLYMOUTH — This February, Mid-State Health Center joins the nation in recognizing American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart health and the prevention of heart disease. This month serves as a reminder to prioritize your heart and learn how simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for one in five deaths, yet it is largely preventable. Understanding the causes, identifying your risk factors, and taking proactive steps are crucial for protecting your heart and promoting long-term health.
While chest pain is a well-known symptom, heart disease can also present in subtler ways, such as shortness of breath, discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back, swelling in the extremities, or pain, weakness, or numbness in the arms or legs. High-blood pressure, often called the “silent killer,” may not show symptoms but significantly increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. Monitoring blood pressure at home is a simple and effective way to stay on top of your heart health.
Protecting your heart starts with everyday lifestyle choices. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish, while limiting sweets and unhealthy fats, helps support cardiovascular health. Regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing alcohol consumption, and quitting smoking are also essential components of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Even small, consistent habits like adding movement to your daily routine and keeping up with regular medical screenings can make a significant difference over time.
This February, take steps to strengthen your heart and encourage your loved ones to do the same. Prioritizing heart health today can help ensure a healthier tomorrow.
