Do you know how important fruits and vegetables are to your diet? Fruits and vegetables are part of a well-balanced and healthy eating plan. Diets that include lots of fruits and vegetables may reduce your risk of some types of cancer and other chronic diseases. Fruits and vegetables also provide essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and other substances that are important for good health. They have no cholesterol, are a healthy source of carbohydrates and depending on how you prepare them, they have little or no fat. It is recommended that at least half your plate be filled with fruits and vegetables. The good news is that all types of fruits and vegetables count, which means canned, dried, fresh and frozen varieties, can help you reach your goal.

No single fruit or vegetable provides all the nutrients you need to be healthy. Eating different colors and types of fruits and vegetables provides the mix of nutrients your body needs for good health. Try to experiment with a new seasonal vegetable or fruit each week. Don't try a tomato in December. You are far more likely to fall in love with its lush, juicy, tangy taste in the height of summer. If you are unfamiliar with a certain fruit or vegetable you are considering trying, don't worry! Grocery stores often have nice descriptions on how to prepare and eat fruits and vegetables that they sell.

Try dark leafy greens, brightly colored red, yellow and orange vegetables and fruits. When you are looking for ways to increase your fruit and vegetable consumption try these tips:

• Leave fruits and vegetables out where you can see them. That way you will be more likely to eat it. Have it washed, cut and prepared so you can just grab and go!

• Take time to explore the produce aisle and choose something new. Variety is the key to a healthy diet.

Farmers markets are another great way to explore new fruits and vegetables. There are several farmers markets in the Lakes and Twin Rivers Regions. Take the time to try them all!
