PLYMOUTH — Plymouth fire officials reminded area residents about the dangers of carbon monoxide, a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that can be deadly, after several people were hospitalized with symptoms.
"Please ensure that exhaust-producing equipment is operated at a proper distance from the building. Please check the manufacturers’ guidelines or call the fire department," said Fire Chief Tom Morrison. "If you become aware of an unsafe condition and/or the fact that individuals are becoming ill in your building, please call 911. That is why we are here. We would rather respond and find nothing, than to have to mitigate a dangerous incident that could have been prevented."
The chief said vents should be serviced regularly.Â
The reminder came after Plymouth Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a business in Plymouth for a carbon monoxide problem. A kerosene heater was in use, exhausting CO into the occupied spaces of the building. The heater had been shut down upon arrival, and the building was ventilated.
Speare Memorial Hospital advised the rescue crew that they had seen three patients at their Emergency Room suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.
