LACONIA — The next soft plastics recycling collection effort will be held, weather permitting, on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Volunteer members of the Laconia-Gilford Lions Club and the Green Sanctuary Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Laconia will be curbside in front of the church at 172 Pleasant St. to accept donated, clean, soft, dry plastics.
All donated plastics are sent via the Gilford Hannaford’s delivery point to the Trex Corp. in Maine to be repurposed responsibly as composite decking and outdoor deck furniture.
“It is better ,of course, simply not to use these plastics, and many are making that decision,” explained Green Sanctuary co-chair and Lions Club me͏m͏ber Inez Andrews. “But they are built into so many aspects of life that even for those who commit to making positive choices the plastics pile up.”
“We are developing other avenues to address the plastics issue,” added Lion Lori Chandler. “In the meantime, we will continue to hold these events, which have been embraced by so many. Our last effort collected 514 pounds of plastics.”
