The 25th annual Winni Derby will take place on May 19, 20, and 21, the weekend following Mother’s Day. More than 2,800 anglers are expected to participate in the three-day event.
Since the early ice out, successful salmon fishermen have been harvesting good looking and healthy, fat fish, according to Winni Derby Executive Director Rick Davis. This, along with the presence of huge schools of smelt, indicates an ample supply of forage for the salmon. “This situation is what we’ve been diligently working for the past several years,” Davis said.
The $65,000 prize list will include four boats, motors and trailers along with many fishing tackle prizes. Daily awards and major prizes will feature electronic fish locators, downriggers, tackle boxes, rods, reels, lures, lines, etc. Presented by Lakes Region Inland Fishing Association, Lowrance Electronics, Lund Boats and Mercury Motors, the popular fishing event is also sponsored by Berkley, Okuma, Scotty Downriggers and Navionics
Grand prize for the largest salmon of the three-day event is a 2006 Lund 1775 Classic Sport boat complete with a Mercury 75 hp four cycle motor and a 2006 Load-Rite trailer.
The second largest salmon will earn a 2006 Lund 1665 Classic Sport boat and 2006 Mercury 50 hp four cycle motor and a Load-Rite trailer.
The largest lake trout of the derby winner will take home a 2006 Lund 1440 Rebel SS boat, a 2006 Mercury 25 hp four cycle motor and a 2006 Load-Rite trailer.
