BRISTOL — The Historical Society has received a grant from the NH Humanities Council to present "The Old Man of the Mountain: Substance and Symbol" at the Old Town Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 23.
Maggie Stier will present the public program about New Hampshire’s most well-known landmark. The story of the Old Man of the Mountain is a story of NH itself, reflecting the state's history, arts, literature, geography, philosophy, and even public policy. As the multifaceted story of the icon enfolds, the audience will be challenged to think about the different and evolving ways that this image has touched the public imagination over its 200 year history. The presentation will include images of paintings, literary passages, souvenirs, and film clips of interviews with those closet to the Old Man, and conclude with a discussion of current efforts to memorialize the state symbol.
