Temple celebrates Tu Bishvat with emphasis on ecologya

LACONIA — Temple B'nai Israel's Tu Bishvat celebration began with a study of Jewish texts relating to ecology, trees and stewardship and compassion for the earth led by Rabbi Boaz Heilman. We reaped the benefit of his research and only managed to get through about a third of the texts he had compiled for us to review. Participants came away with many new insights into our role in the care of the land (Israel) and the earth at large, as well as the materials Rabbi provided for future study.

We broke for a meal of delicious homemade soups, a beautiful tree shaped challah, thae fruits associated with the holiday, bread and cheese, as well as wonderful desserts and good conversation and friendship.

The meal was followed by a program presented by Sarah Dunham-Miliotis, from Prescott Farm Environmental Education Center. Her presentation spanned over 15,000 years of the history of the land we now call New Hampshire. It is safe to say everyone learned something new and useful, whether about our ancient history, forest stewardship and regeneration, or fun facts.
