Starting at 7 p.m. on October 16, the Lakes Region Planning Commission (LRPC) will host a meeting on the new Workforce Housing law in the first floor conference room of the Humiston Building, located at 103 Main Street. With recent approval of Senate Bill 342, New Hampshire municipalities are now required to provide “realistic opportunities for the development of workforce housing, including rental multi-family housing.” This law is designed to address the adverse economic impact that a statewide shortage of affordable housing has had on New Hampshire businesses and their ability to attract, house, and retain a sufficient labor force.

LRPC is helping to ensure that area communities are fully aware of the law, which becomes effective July 1, 2009. Ben Frost, a chief negotiator and proponent of the workforce housing law, will present valuable insight and guidance. Frost currently serves as Director of Public Affairs for the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority (NHHFA). The meeting is free of charge, and open to the public.

An association of 30 municipalities, the LRPC has active programs in land use and environmental planning, transportation, watershed protection, economic development, technical assistance, and information services. Please contact the Lakes Region Planning Commission at 279-8171 if you have any questions.
