LACONIA — "Two Views of Africa," a collaboration between photographer Nancy Dirubbo and artist Larry Frates, will be on display at Multicultural Market Day on Saturday, September 11. The 18 images will be exhibited under a tent gallery in the Health Link parking lot, demonstrating that photography and art can compliment each other in the same gallery space.

Earlier this year, Dirubbo traveled to Kenya and Frates to South Africa. During that time they recorded their travels with camera and paint but it wasn’t until this summer that the two realized their images would tell a story of beauty much different from New Hampshire.

"Traveling to Kenya was a dream I had as a child," said Dirubbo, FNP, a travel health specialist from Travel Health of NH. "Everything about Kenya is larger than life — the people, the animals, the plains, the mountains. There was never a moment where I was disappointed." Her images tell that very story and also served as the inspiration to the Frates pallet knife paintings.

Frates, whose downtown Arts Center is one of the hosts of the Market Day event, added, “The excitement of having the opportunity to be in South Africa was beyond belief. The opportunity to visit Johannesburg and Krueger Park inspired my imagination and the personal connection of meeting my son-in-law's family and friends made the trip complete.”

Following the one-day exhibit in Laconia, the images will move to the Riverside Gallery in Gilmanton Iron Works for the remainder of the month.
