Dig out your poodle skirts, go-go boots, leather jackets, and penny loafers and get ready for some “old school rockin’” in Belmont on Saturday, August 9. A committee of volunteers has been busy planning events around the ‘50s and ‘60s theme of “Rockin’ to the Oldies” for this year’s Old Home Day celebration.

What’s an Old Home Day without a Road Race? This year, it will be the 40th running of the annual 10-mile Road Race and the 20th running of the Tioga River Fun Run. Registration forms will be available on the Town of Belmont’s website (see www.belmontnh.org, under About Belmont section, Old Home Day).

Organizers are still taking applications for vendor space at this time and are especially looking to expand on the number of crafters for this year. They would love to help showcase your creations. If you are interested in space, you can contact Janet Breton at 267-8329 or Tina Fleming at 528-5393 to inquire.

Get your friends, family, civic groups, and neighbors together now to start planning float entries. As you plan, be sure to check out our new float safety requirements on the town’s website at www.belmontnh.org (under About Belmont section, Old Home Day) in preparation for August 9. Judging for parade entries will be done prior to the start of the parade this year. This will allow us to improve traffic flow and shorten wait times for those little float riders by only sending the entries through once along the parade route. For more information about the parade please contact Brian Loanes at 528-4863. Entry forms can also be found on the town’s website.

To remind us of the good ‘ol days of “Doo Wop”, two bands will be featured. Mid-day, the trio “Routes ‘56” (www.routes56.com) will be delighting the crowd downtown near the Library (10:30 a.m.). That evening (6:30 p.m.), Bryant Field (Rte. 106) will come alive with the wonderful sounds of “Annie and The Orphans” (www.annieandtheorphans.com). Their music will help bring back memories of a simpler time in America, a time when when Fats Domino and Chuck Berry dominated the airwaves.

Children’s activities, a pancake breakfast, and a talent show, are just some of the other activities organizers are planning. Would you like to get involved? We are always looking for volunteers to help with various activities throughout the day. If you can’t volunteer your time but would like to sponsor an event with a monetary donation, that would be greatly appreciated to help us continue to offer the day’s activities for free. Please contact Tina Fleming at 528-5393 or Gretta Olson-Wilder at 524-2782 to discuss how you can help.
