Arts Council of Tamworth will bring the sounds of Scotland to Tamworth when it brings Old Blind Dogs, direct from their appearance at the New Hampshire Highland Games in Contoocook, to The Barnstormers Theatre for a 7:30 p.m. concert on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Since founding in 1990, the Old Blind Dogs have stood on the cutting edge of Scotland’s roots revival. The band has developed its own trademark style in which dynamic percussion (including the African-flavored djembe and congas) and bluesy harmonica fuel the melodies of traditional songs, putting the sounds of northeastern Scotland on the world-music map. Vocalist Jim Malcolm, with his rich, lush voice, is regarded as one of Scotland’s finest traditional singers. He is backed by group founders Jonny Hardie on fiddle, guitar, and mandolin and Buzzby McMillan on bass and cittern, along with piper Rory Campbell and percussionist Fraser Stone.
After recording five highly-praised albums in their home country, Old Blind Dogs have had three U.S. releases on Green Linnet Records, the latest being the energetic, inspired selection of songs and tunes called The Gab o Mey, which translates to “the end of winter; the beginning of May” from the Scots dialect.
The Los Angeles Times said “Old Blind Dogs brings freshness and color to acoustic music steeped in centuries of Scottish folklore and history.” Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of the most popular contemporary Scottish folk groups on their current tour.
This concert is made possible by co-sponsors Bruce Robinson Construction and Independent Color Press, along with the support of media sponsor Mount Washington Radio, featuring the sounds of 93.5 WMWV and Magic 104.5.
Tickets for this concert are priced at $13 for adults in advance or $15 at the door, $7 for students ages 13 & older, and $2 for children under 13. They can be purchased now at The Sound Resort, Chinook Café, Tamworth Village Store, Sandwich General Store, or by calling ACT at 603-323-8104.
