New Hampshire Community Technical College-Laconia faculty member Jennifer Anderson's Introduction to Psychology class was unique in that it was offered by the college tuition-free to non-traditional age students with no prior college experience.
Don Morrissey, interim president, has learned over the years that non-traditional students such as the women pictured here typically do extremely well in college classes academically once they overcome their fears. This class conclusively proved the point as all were successful in this first effort.
“Over the years I have heard numerous potential students speak about fear; fear of not doing well because they had been out of high school for so long, fear that they would fail, fear they are too old for college and fear that they would not fit in. My experience has proven that the opposite is true and that students, such as these successful women, do very well in college classes.”
Morrissey used a grant from his System Board of Trustees to cover the tuition costs in this experimental class. Based on their success in this first class, several are now enrolled in summer classes at the College while others are selecting courses for the fall semester.
