MEREDITH — Carter Smith, junior at Inter-Lakes High School attended the "C for yourself" weekend overview at Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. The trip was sponsored by the local PEO International Chapter G. Jane Flynn, PEO Chapter G President accompanied Carter to Missouri.
PEO is a philanthropic organization dedicated to the advancement and education of women. PEO and Cottey College have enjoyed a partnership for over seventy five years providing an exceptional college experience for women. Cottey began as a two year women's college, but has grown to offer both two and four year degrees. They also offer second year students "the opportunity to spend the first week of spring break visiting a European city with classmates and faculty, learning about art, history, science and culture, without any additional cost to the students."
Smith plans to major in psychology and was able to talk directly with the psychology professors on campus, and was struck by their passion for cognitive psychology, biopsychology, and social psychology. She was pleased to learn the Early Childhood Development and Psychology courses she's taking at Inter-Lakes High School will give her a good head start on her major. She also asked about transferring her Early Childhood Running Start credits from Lakes Region Community College and was pleased to hear they would transfer in as elective credits.
Smith states, "Cottey seems like a close knit college community, with an emphasis on community service. I was excited to meet students from Africa and Egypt and didn't realize girls come from all over the world to attend Cottey. Cottey focuses on independence and global experiences and I'm excited to possibly live and learn in that type of an environment. I encourage other girls to visit Cottey and to have the same experience I had. I'm thankful that Jane Flynn took time to fly out with me and that my local PEO chapter sponsored my trip and is helping me with this journey."
