MOULTONBOROUGH — Cameron Shannon, a sixth grade student at Central School, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local poster competition sponsored by the Moultonborough Lions Club. Judging was held Nov. 9.

Cameron's winning poster was selected for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "Share Peace." Her poster was among more than 450,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest and will now have the opportunity to advance through higher levels of competition.

Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

Moultonborough Lions Club President, Jeni Williams said she was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students of the Moultonborough School District. "It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I'm so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions."

Williams said the Lions would like to extend thanks and appreciation to all the individuals at both schools in the district who helped promote the contest and some of whom also helped to judge the entries: Superintendent, Susan Noyes: MCS Principle Kathleen D'Haene, MA Vice Principal, Derek Patterson: MA Social Studies teacher, Chip Nyhan; and District Art teacher, Terry Dempsy.

One international grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will ultimately be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000 plus a trip for the winner and two family members to a special award ceremony. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.

"Our club is cheering for Cameron as her poster advances in the completion, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world," said Sally Sibulkin, poster contest liaison between the school district and the local Lions Club.
