GILFORD — Horizons Counseling Center is inviting the public to an open house to mark the center's celebration of Recovery Month on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at their offices in Village West in Gilford.

Horizons Counseling Center, an independent, non-profit organization which deals with people suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders, has been serving the Lakes Region since 1987. Horizons' mission is to offer quality, affordable treatment, to raise community awareness of the disease of addiction and its consequences for individuals and families. It also seeks to remove the stigma and discrimination associated with addiction and mental illness through community education. It provides assessment, outpatient individual, group and family counseling, trauma-focused treatment for women in early recovery, specialized adolescent treatment and intensive outpatient treatment through the Nathan Brody Program.

In addition to its Gilford location at Village West 1, Suites 705 and 607, Horizons operates a satellite facility in Plymouth.

Two years ago the Nathan Brody Program became an integral part of the Horizons array of services, allowing it to expand its ability to provide clients with a smooth transition between levels of care based on individual need rather than mere availability.

Horizons Counseling Center has developed strong alliances with the medical, educational, social service and criminal justice arenas in the region. It takes special pride of its role in the Recovery Court initiative which brought together the county Department of Corrections, the Public Defender's Office, the County Attorney, the county Restorative Justice Program and the District Court in a cooperative effort to engage offenders with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders in an intensive treatment and skills building program geared toward supporting recovery and engendering responsibility and accountability through community service, education and employment. The goal is to assist offenders in becoming productive members of their families and their communities.
