Great ladies of history to ‘visit’ Moultonborough Library

MOULTONBOROUGH — The Moultonborough Library will be starting a Living History Program sponsored by the NH Humanities Council titled Great Ladies of History. These programs will be held throughout the month of May.

"A Visit With Queen Victoria," on Wednesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. Living history performer Sally Mummey will impersonate Her Royal Highness, complete with 19th-century dress and Royal Orders. In 1837, teenaged Victoria ascended to the British throne, untrained and innocent. Those who would try to usurp her power underestimated this self-willed intelligent young woman whose mettle sustained her through her 63-year reign. Using Queen Victoria's diary and letters, this program reveals the personal details of a powerful yet humane woman, who took seriously her role as monarch in a time of great expansion.

On Wednesday, May 27, Eleanor Roosevelt, as impersonated by Elena Dodd will present a frank and often humorous look at the struggles and personal fulfillment of a shy young woman who metamorphosed into a strong voice for social justice and universal human rights and was witness to the tumultuous events of her day.

Other literary programs during May include an appearance by author Duke Southard, who will talk about his new novel, "Live Free or Die- A Sequel" on Monday, May 18 at 7 p.m. Duke lived in Tuftonboro for forty years before moving to Arizona in 2009. This program will focus on his new novel, "Live Free or Die", which was released in February, and will discuss questions that he has found readers pondering since he began presenting programs in 2000. Included are such subjects as how writers come up with their story ideas, and what makes a reader continue reading even when the book stretches the limits of believability. Duke has generously donated four of his books to the library, and they may be borrowed.

There will be a book discussion on "The Shipping News," by E. Annie Proulx on Thursday, May 21 at 10:30 a.m. Professor Christine Evans of Lesley University will be the discussion leader. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch and stay to watch the movie, starring Kevin Spacey and Julianne Moore, following the discussion.
