Generous gift helps rebuild Boys & Girls Club kitchen

LACONIA — Lois Roy Dickerman's grandson Ted Roy remembers the way she clapped her hands for joy whenever one of her five grandchildren or 15 great-grandchildren came to visit. "She was a smiling, happy person, and children were a big part of her life," he recalls.

Not surprisingly, children and families are a focus area of the Lois G. Roy Dickerman Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

Ted and his wife, Jennifer, who own Water Street Cafe in Laconia, are among the fund's advisors. When they heard about the needs of club members just up the street from their business, they were glad to advise a gift from the fund.

Funding the kitchen was particularly meaningful for the Roys. Ted has fond memories of cooking breakfast as a kid for his grandmother and grandfather Eddie Roy.

"At the end of the meal I would find a scratch piece of paper to prepare a bill for their breakfast. Yes, my grandfather always paid. But what I loved more than anything was seeing how happy it made both of them. It's what inspires my desire to run our business today."

The gift will make it possible for the club to serve free evening meals to members as well as attract and retain at-risk teens.

"I think Lois would have been really pleased," Jennifer notes. "She was a beautiful person, inside and out."
