The Public Library has received a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council to sponsor a thought-provoking public program titled “Caring for Our Elders”. The series will explore how we can best care for our aging parents and others close to us. The discussions will offer insight into what it means to grow older and how elders can be supported in their journey to the end with dignity. The schedule is as follows:
— October 7 - Book: "As We Are Now" by May Sarton. Discussion leader: Maren Tirabasse, independent scholar. The heartwarming story of an elderly schoolteacher trying to retain her dignity as she enters a nursing home.
— November 3 - Book: "No More Words" by Reeve Lindbergh. Discussion leader: Frumie Selchen, independent scholar. A memoir of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s final 22 months written by her daughter.
— December 2nd – Book: "The Spectator Bird" by Wallace Stegner. Discussion leader: Jennifer Lee, independent scholar. A retired literary agent and his wife relive a trip they took to Denmark 20 years ago by reading together the journal he kept while they were there.
Copies of the books are available at the adult circulation desk. All discussions will take place at 7 p.m. in Laconia Rotary Hall at the Library. For more information, call 524-4775 x15.
