A one-day Introduction to broom-making will take place on Saturday, August 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Sunday, August 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Canterbery Shaker Village.

Explore the history of the Shaker broom-making industry and discover why a well-constructed broom should stand on its own. Learn from experienced broomsquire Jack Frost the complete step-by-step process for crafting a flat broom of broomcorn. Please bring strong hands and a sense of humor. All materials are included and no experience is necessary. Fee is $50 for non-members, $45.50 for members.

Mother Ann Day

Sunday, August 6 is a traditional Shaker holiday, commemorating the arrival in America of Mother Ann Lee in 1774. Ann Lee was a founding member and leader of the Shaker religion in England and one of the first women to found a religious movement in America. The program will include Shaker music and a lecture in the Chapel followed by a reception featuring the special and delicious rosewater-flavored Mother Ann Cake.

Build a clock

Build a Shaker-inspired clock with instructor Richard Bennett on Saturday, August 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In this one-day workshop you will assemble a Shaker-inspired clock. Learn the steps to prepare or a hand rubbed oil finish and apply the first finish coat. Final finishing will be done on your own. All supplies and tools are provided and no experience is necessary. Fee is $110 for non-members, $99 for members.

Shaker rugs

Make Shaker rugs with instructor Rose Ann Hunter on Sunday, August 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Try your hand at making a variety of traditional Shaker rugs including crocheted spirit rugs, confetti rugs, starburst rugs, knitted coiled and circular and multicircular rugs. All rugs are done with a simple knit or crochet stitch and can be done in wool or fabric. Small samples of each type of rug will be completed in class. Some fabric will be provided, but participants can bring their own old fabric scraps or old sheets to cut up and use. Fee is $61 for non-members, $55 for members.
