WOLFEBORO — The 2017 Community Contra Dance Series hosted by G.A.L.A. (Global Awareness Local Action) resumes at the Wolfeboro Town Hall's "Great Hall" Saturday, Jan. 28, this time featuring the band Brier Hill.
Dances run from 7 to 10 p.m. beginning with a brief overview of the easy basics of New England contra-dance.
January's headline band, Brier Hill, has been playing local farmers markets and dances in the Wolfeboro/Ossipee area for the last four years. Named for one of the roads in Canaan Valley where they started playing, the band serves up standard New England dance tunes drawn from the French Canadian and British fiddle traditions. The Brier Hill musicians are Lane and Scott Evans, Patrick O'Hagin, Michael Haeger and Tim Morrison.
Eric Rolnick, the night's caller, from Conway, has called throughout the region for several decades. Some may recognize him from his many Wolfeboro First Night performances as founder and leader of the Caribbean steel band, Mango Groove.
Black's Paper and Gifts is sponsoring this month's dance.
Dance admission fees are as follows: $8 for adults, $5 for 6-18 year olds and 5 and under free. Anyone experiencing financial hardship is invited to pay what they can and no one will be turned away for financial reasons. To protect the newly refinished wood floor in the Great Hall participants are encouraged to bring an extra pair of shoes for dancing that do not have a black sole.
