LACONIA — The Laconia Daily Sun ran an article on Oct. 19 detailing the ribbon cutting by Grand Knight Kepler Padilla of the Knights of Columbus Laconia Council 428, of Huasta House of Hope, a center for the children and seniors of the city of Huasta, in the Andes of Peru. In that article Brother Kepler mentioned the instruction being given at the home to the children of Huasta since they were not being permitted to study at school, but were being taught virtually. Since most families have only one cell phone if any, and most families have more than one child, at best only one and at times none of the children receive any education.
At the time Brother Kepler opened Huasta House of Hope, the first thing that was installed was WIFI, and a complete overhead projection system so that the children could begin using the House for their studies. One thing that was lacking were tablets for the children to use since their instruction varied by age.
Your readers responded with overwhelming generosity to enable Brother Kepler to purchase 15 tablets for the children to use. Brother Kepler contracted a local English teacher who has held classes every Tuesday and Thursday morning for three hours each day for a total of six weeks.
The classes have been a success with 29 children enrolled, their graduation was held this past Saturday. At the same celebration, Huasta House of Hope presented the children of the city with backpacks each containing supplies needed for their return to school. Due to cost constraints, we were only able to purchase and distribute 50 backpacks. Due to the number of children that were left without these necessities, the House ordered an additional 50 backpacks with the supplies needed. The cost of each set is $22 US.
