NORTHFIELD — The sweet smell of boiling sap filled the air as students at Southwick School completed their maple syrup production project. This hands-on learning experience allowed students to witness the transformation of raw maple sap into delicious, homemade maple syrup.

For weeks third grade students have been involved in every step of the process, from tapping maple trees on the school grounds to collecting the sap, and finally, the exciting culmination of boiling it down to syrup. All students are participating in the culminating event.

“This project is a fantastic way for our students to learn about nature, science, and even a bit of history,” said STEAM teacher Brian Winslow.  “They get to experience firsthand how a natural resource can be transformed into something delicious, and they gain a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into producing the food we enjoy. Maple production naturally lends itself to elementary level math and science goals, and is a great introduction to local history.”

The project not only provides a valuable educational experience but also fosters teamwork and a sense of accomplishment among the students. The school and food service staff plan to use the homemade maple syrup on pancakes for the students next week.
