MOULTONBOROUGH — The Moultonborough Public Library will host "The First Amendment," a presentation led by constitutional scholar, Meg Mott, on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m.
The program examines the vital balance between protecting freedom of speech and responding to speech that threatens the social fabric. Mott will explore the constitutional arguments surrounding hate speech codes, including the landmark 1992 Supreme Court ruling against St. Paul’s hate speech ordinance, and will discuss alternative strategies to counter hateful rhetoric, focusing on citizen-led persuasion and civil deliberation.
Mott brings a wealth of expertise to the community after 20 years of teaching political theory and constitutional law at Marlboro College. An alumnus of the University of New Hampshire, she currently teaches at Keene State College. Her award-winning series, Debating Our Rights, is renowned for bringing constructive, civil discussions on complex constitutional issues to public audiences.
