WOLFEBORO — Makers Mill is excited to announce that Casey Szmyt has been selected as its next program director following a thoughtful and highly competitive search process.
This appointment marks an important transition for the organization and an exciting new chapter in Makers Mill's continued growth and impact throughout Carroll County and the greater Lakes Region.
As Szmyt prepares to step into this leadership role, Makers Mill also recognizes the extraordinary contributions of outgoing Program Director Carol Holyoake. Through years of dedication, creativity, and care, Holyoake helped shape Makers Mill into the vibrant community makerspace it is today. From developing programs and supporting instructors to welcoming new members and helping thousands of people discover the joy of making, Carol's impact can be felt throughout every corner of the organization.
The programs, relationships, and culture that make Makers Mill special today are built in no small part because of her belief in the power of creativity to bring people together.
Finding the right person to build upon that foundation was no small task.
Throughout the search process, Szmyt stood out for her unique combination of operational leadership, project management expertise, relationship building, and creative passion. Most recently, she served as an account manager with a Portland-based digital marketing agency, where she coordinated branding, website development, client relationships, and growth initiatives. Prior to that, she spent six years with Home Instead, including serving as director of operations, where she led teams, developed systems, and coordinated services for seniors throughout southern New Hampshire.
Just as importantly, Szmyt is a maker herself.
Through her business, Pen & Periwinkle, she creates illustrations, stationery, prints, and other handmade goods and regularly participates in local makers markets. Creativity is not simply something she supports professionally. It is something she lives every day.
"Carol leaves behind an incredible legacy, and finding someone who could build upon that foundation was no small task," said Executive Director Josh Arnold. "Casey brings a rare combination of professional experience, creative talent, and community-minded leadership. She understands what makes Makers Mill special, and she shares our commitment to creating welcoming opportunities for people of all ages to learn, make, and connect. I couldn't be more excited to welcome her to the team."
What impressed Makers Mill leadership most throughout the hiring process was Szmyt's commitment to people and community. She is passionate about creating welcoming spaces where people can learn new skills, share ideas, build confidence, and connect with others. Her enthusiasm for creativity, lifelong learning, and community building made her a natural fit for the role.
Originally from Southern New Hampshire, Casey now lives in Freedom with her two cats and spends much of her free time exploring artistic pursuits ranging from illustration and calligraphy to linocut printing, scrapbooking, and just about any creative medium she can get her hands on.
