Scary works by Edgar Allan Poe headline two free public events this month, in Meredith and Laconia.

To welcome Halloween, a dramatic recital of "The Raven" and more work by Edgar Allan Poe, will be offered by Innisfree Bookshops at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Meredith, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Laconia.

The Meredith shop is at 312 Daniel Webster Highway; in Laconia at 630 Main St.

The program is free and open to the public. No registration required.

New Hampshire poet and writer Jeffrey Zygmont will offer the recitals.

Poe’s famous poem "The Raven" and other work will be presented to entertain listeners and to enhance the spooky mood of the Halloween season.

The dramatic recitals, accompanied by creepy props, will include explanations that enrich the works and make Poe’s poems more relevant to contemporary listeners.

Raven cutout cookies will be served as a light refreshment.

The Laconia presentation coincides with the city’s annual weekend Pumpkin Festival.
