MEREDITH — It was a banner day for the Community Garden Club of Meredith on Thursday, Nov. 18, as members celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the club in 1951. More than 53 creative and dedicated women have served as leaders of this volunteer organization, several having served multiple terms.

The club is dedicated to promoting horticultural education, community beautification and conservation through volunteerism and friendship.

Throughout the years, donations have been made to: Altrusa Festival of Trees, Laverack Nature Trail at Hawkins Brook, Page Pond Community Forest, GMP Archie Statue project, Lakes Region Conservation Trust, Meredith Conservation Commission, Loon Preservation Society, and annually to the Meredith, Center Harbor and Moultonborough libraries.

Forty members attended the Anniversary Luncheon and Program at The Great House at Meredith Bay Village, Meredith. The event committee headed by Roberta Gasco and Julie Rizzo along with board members created a memorable event enjoyed by all attendees. Honored guests included two members of the Meredith Select Board as well as the Chair of the Greater Meredith Program. The luncheon was catered by The Mug. Member-made desserts were staged in glass containers and pedestal cake plates and decorated with sparkling mini lights. The club’s flower is the rose and rose themed napkins wrapped the flatware. Centerpieces featured bud vases with single roses and baby’s breath and greens. Rose petals were scattered on individual tables as well as the buffet table.

Adding to the ambiance, past yearbooks, historical photos, drawings, framed artwork from the 2001 Club Cookbook and other materials from the archives were artfully displayed. Featuring decades of service projects, a slideshow of past members and activities showcased the 70 years of service to the greater Meredith community and was created by Martha Billings and Jodi Wilson.
