MEREDITH — Along with warming spring temperatures, more people are warming to trying to grow some of their own food.
“There’s no doubt that many more people are interested in growing vegetables this year,” said Moulton Farm owner John Moulton. “Because we grow vegetable seedlings for our garden center, as well as for our fields, people always ask us questions, but this year, we’re getting more questions and earlier than ever.”
Moulton said the enthusiasm likely stems from a variety of reasons. Initial gardening workshops for the season, hosted at the farm, filled within 48 hours.
“We added dates to repeat that workshop and those filled up quickly as well,” Moulton said. “We initially planned to do other workshops, but we’ve expanded our plans. We’ll also be offering workshops for people who like to grow things besides vegetables.”
Moulton notes people don’t have to attend the earlier workshops to get a lot of helpful information at the upcoming workshops.
Success with Transplanting Vegetables will be offered Tuesday, May 13, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 pm.
“Even the healthiest vegetable seedling, whether you’ve grown it yourself or gotten it from a quality garden center like ours, will struggle or fail if you’re not careful,” said Moulton. “What you do and don’t do is different depending on the vegetables you are trying to grow. We’ll cover this in the workshop.”
How to Keep Your Vegetable Garden Growing will be on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It will cover how to deal with common vegetable garden issues.
“A lot can go wrong during the growing season,” said Moulton. “Weather, pests, and other things can cause problems in your garden that can challenge your plants. We’ll cover what to do to help avoid issues before they happen, early signs of issues to watch out for, and how to deal with common problems when they arise.”
